Waning Moon Ritual

Letting Go Ritual: A Waning Moon Practice for Release

Loosen your grip on what's already leaving. No materials, no preparation — just ten minutes and your breath.

The waning moon — the two weeks between full and new — is the moon visibly shrinking, night after night. Where the full moon ritual is a single decisive release, the waning phase is slower: a gradual practice for things that don't let go all at once.

This is the simplest ritual in this whole series. No candle, no paper, nothing to buy or set up. You can do it standing in a kitchen or sitting on the edge of a bed. That simplicity is deliberate — some things you're letting go of don't need ceremony, they need repetition.

Ritual

Waning Moon Letting Go

Loosen your grip on what's already leaving

Duration ~10 minutes
Timing Waning phase
Steps
  1. Sit quietly for a minute.
  2. Name one thing you're ready to release.
  3. Exhale it out loud, three times.

What 'ready to release' actually means

This ritual works on things that are already loosening, not things you're forcing yourself to let go of on a deadline. A grudge that's started to feel more tiring than righteous. A habit you've already mostly stopped but still think about. A version of a plan you've quietly accepted isn't happening.

If nothing comes to mind, that's useful information too — not everything needs releasing every cycle, and forcing the question can create something to let go of that wasn't actually there.

Why say it out loud, three times

One exhale can be reflexive. Three, spoken, turns it into something closer to a decision. There's no required volume or performance to it — a whisper counts as much as speaking normally. The repetition is what matters, not the delivery.

Doing this across the whole waning phase

Because this ritual is unscheduled-friendly — no specific night required — it works well done more than once across the two-week waning window, especially for something that's taking longer to actually loosen. There's no rule against naming the same thing three nights in a row if that's genuinely where you are.

Common questions

Is this different from the full moon release ritual?

Yes — the full moon ritual is a single, deliberate burning of one specific thing. This one is lighter and repeatable, for things that release gradually rather than all at once.

Can I do this every night during the waning moon?

Yes, that's a reasonable way to use it. It's short enough and materials-free enough to repeat without it becoming a burden.

What if I can't tell whether the moon is currently waning?

Any moon-phase app or a quick search will tell you, or just track by eye — a waning moon is shrinking from full toward new, roughly two weeks after the most recent full moon.
